I get asked why I support Celtic. I’m not Scottish, definitely not Irish nor am I a Catholic. I’m far from those three, so why would an Asian-Australian with no religious connection whatsoever want to support a club like Celtic?
As a kid in Australia, football (yes, football not s******) is not popular. At all. Often derided as ‘wog-ball’. So for me to have any meaningful connection to a local club is virtually non-existent, unlike everywhere else in Europe. Unless you are of Italian, Serbian, Croatian, Greek and etc., where clubs are established with strong roots, it seems almost pointless to be interested in the domestic competition. (I am interested in the domestic competition by the way as I want football to flourish)
Anyway, but from my years (and I mean years) of watching football, I’ve realised certain things. Unless you get sucked into it as a youngin’ (like me), there’s little reason to support overseas clubs. But if you do decide to, you better have a good reason otherwise your adoration of footballers is no different to adolescent girls who go ballistic for boy-bands.
Unlike Liverpool who I have supported for as long as I can remember, I only really started to actually follow Celtic. When I mean follow, I don’t mean just buying a jersey or watching an Old Firm game or two. I mean researching into the clubs origins, their players, their culture, sticking by them when they lose and things that give you a better idea of the greater picture.
I’ve decide to support Celtic as I am 100% the causes and ethos of the club. A football club established by Irish immigrants in Scotland to raise funds for the impoverished Irish community in Scotland and back in Ireland. Essentially, they are the immigrants club. Their struggle in Scotland, so much I can relate to (despite never having been called a “Fenian Bastards” and probably never will). In Australia, if you are not Anglo-Saxon and happen to be in a rural town, don’t exactly expect the warmest of welcomings, in fact expect a lot of stares and horns and Fuck Off You Gook Cunt. My point is, is that for children of migrants who are passionate about football, especially Asians, it is really hard to find a connecting level. There are no Asian-Australian sporting superstars. For Celtic, it was a similar issue with the Irish before the club was established. Despite the successes of Celtic they still face a consistent struggle, a sectarian and ruthless struggle something which I can relate to, strongly.
But as long as Celtic do well, those Fenian Bastards can still scream loudly and proudly, giving this little gook something to cheer for in order to spur my drunken euphoric experiences.
